Pučišća


Brac is Croatian island in the Adriatic situated in front of the city of Split. Brac is the largest island in Dalmatia and the third largest island in the Adriatic Sea. This unique island has numerous smaller and largeer picturesque villages of which following are inhabited: Bobovisca, Bobovisca na Moru, Bol, Dol (Marina), Dracevica, Lower Humac, Upper Humac, Lozisca, Milna, Mirca Murvica, Nerezisca, Novo Selo, Podhume, Marina, Povlja, Praznica, Pucisca, Split, Sumartin, Supetar, Sutivan, Selce and Skrip.

Pucisca are small sea side resort and port on the northern coast of the island of Brac situated at the end of deep bay between Marina and Povlja. Pucisca are independent municipality comprising places Praznice and Gornji Humac. Together with town of Supetar they are the biggest resort on the island with some 2000 inhabitants.

The name of Pucisca derives from the Latin word „puteus“that means well, and refers to sources with salt, brackish water used for the supply of livestock. The history of this wonderful site goes way back into the past and can be traced through the numerous archaeological findings such as the Illyrian graves, that testify the presence of first inhabitants Illyrians, who traded with Greeks, that mostly inhabited the inner parts of the resort, and of the Romans who opened the quarries and started the trend of migration from the interior areas to the coastal area, building their villa rustiche in placid bays. During the Old Christian era, in the period from the 6th – 7th century in the area of Pucisca early Christian churches, basilicas and monasteries were built. Today these sacral buildings offer a truly special experience to its visitors. Early Christian basilica from the 6th century, church of St. Stephen, the parish church of the Virgin Mary on location Batko from year 1482, church of St. Jerome completed in 1576 and decorated with seven altars, church of St. George located west from Pucisca on Vela Bracuti built in 13 century, church of St. Lucy on the location Race above the parish church, and church of Our Lady of Lourdes from year 1906 on location Celo at the entrance to the place are just some of the religious buildings that will be happy to share their story with you during your visit. 

The construction of settlement in bay Pucisca began sometime after year 1420 when the danger of continuous pirates’ attacks seized to exist. The period of peace, unfortunately, did not last long because with the cessation of pirates danger, in year 1462 begun the period of the Turkish threat. In this period Pucisca build forecastles for defense, to be more precise 13 beautiful castle forts some of them (Cyprian Zuvetica castle, castle Aquila and castle of family Deskovic) have been preserved to present day. Due to this fortifications Pucisca wear colorful nickname Tower Port.

Another beautiful peculiarity of this small place is an ongoing tradition of stone cutting. The only stone carving school in this area has been successfully operating in Pucisca for years. Its work and experts are famous worldwide, while its workshop is wonderful addition to exceptional amenities that Pucisca has to offer to its guests during and outside the season.
